Bachelor of Science

Diplomas on offer

Undergraduates will have access to a range of diplomas which may be completed concurrently with bachelors degrees, to enable them to complete an in-depth sequence of study in disciplines such as mathematics, languages, and music. The diploma normally consists of a sequence of first, second and third year subjects in a relevant area of study. Applications for concurrent diplomas are made following enrolment in an undergraduate degree.

Diploma in Informatics

The Diploma in Informatics provides an option for students in all new generation degrees (except Biomedicine) to complete a sequence of study in the IT area, in order to complement their main major. This is a concurrent diploma, which means it must be undertaken in conjunction with a degree in another discipline at the University . You can enrol in the Diploma of Informatics after completing 50 points of Informatics subjects (see 'Course Structure' below).

Note: Students in the Bachelor of Science majoring in any of Computer Science, Science Informatics or Software Systems cannot enrol in the Diploma in Informatics.

Diploma in Mathematical Sciences

The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences enables students to complete one specialization of the Mathematics and Statistics major from the Bachelor of Science. Students who take appropriate mathematics or statistics subjects within the breadth component of their bachelor degree will be eligible to complete the diploma by taking an extra 50 points (four subjects) in Mathematics and Statistics in addition to the 300 points needed for your bachelor degree. In some circumstances it may be possible to complete your bachelor degree and the Diploma within three years.

The Diploma in Mathematical Sciences is available to students who are currently enrolled in the New Generation undergraduate degrees of Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Science or Music.

Note: For more information please contact the Science Student Centre.

Diploma in Languages

The Diploma in Languages enables students to gain an undergraduate diploma in a single language in an integrated sequence. The concurrent diploma may be awarded provided students complete 50 points of subjects in addition to the 300 points required for the New Generation degrees. Some studies completed in the New Generation Bachelor of Arts will also be credited toward the diploma. Where possible, these diplomas can be completed within three years. The following languages are available: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish.

Diploma in Music (Practical)

The Diploma in Music (Practical) provides students with the opportunity to pursue practical music study, but without committing to professional music training. The Diploma is structured around a three-year sequence of practical study, to which a student adds a suite of six Music Skills electives and two Advanced electives. The practical subjects involve weekly one-to-one tuition and instrumental/vocal masterclasses, as well as the opportunity to perform in regular concert classes.

Completing two degrees sequentially

Students, who complete one New Generation undergraduate degree such as Science, may apply to undertake a second or sequential New Generation undergraduate degree. Applicants who meet the entry requirements for the second degree (including prerequisites) will be granted 100 points of credit. Most sequential (or second) degrees will be able to be completed in two full-time years of study, but sequencing of subjects may necessitate three years in some degrees.
