Which achievement are you most proud of?
My greatest achievements are undoubtedly my two gorgeous daughters, but I'm also very proud of each of
my books. I've been very fortunate to work with some wonderful publishers, editors and designers who've helped
turn my manuscripts into beautiful books.
Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by researchers who have made great contributions both to their disciplines and to the broader
community through their writing. People like S. J. Gould, Richard Dawkins, Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov combine
great writing with impressive scientific credentials although they are not always appreciated for the latter.
I am always impressed by women (and some men) in science who manage to combine the intense, competitive demands
of their work without neglecting their own personal, family and social needs. It's a difficult task and I admire
those who succeed in achieving balance in their lives.
In three words, science is...
Creative, critical and co-operative.
What is your biggest scientific ambition?
My biggest scientific ambition is to reveal to a broader audience the passion and creativity that
drives most scientists to do their research. The scientific method is a wonderful tool that anyone
can use to assess information and discoveries in everyday life.
Science doesn't have to be complicated and I think scientists often sell themselves short in appreciating
the beauty and wonder of what they do and how they do it. All scientists have to be good communicators to be
successful in their own field - sometimes they just need to broaden their communication skills to a wider audience.
And as a society we need to be prepared to listen and appreciate their experience and perspectives.
