Communications Coordinator
I have been able to use my passion for science in all my previous roles...Science opens up many doors - not
just a career in a laboratory.
60 seconds with Alice
Where are you currently working?
I am currently working as the Communications Coordinator, with SP AusNet. SP AusNet plays a vital role in
the energy supply industry of Victoria. The Group's electricity transmission and distribution networks, along
with its gas distribution assets, enable them to deliver a full range of energy-related products and services
to industrial and domestic customers.
What does your job involve?
My job is to enhance and protect the SP AusNet business reputation through management of its brand, sponsorship
programs, corporate events and stakeholder communications. I am also responsible for coordinating internal
communication for and with our 1500 employees.
What jobs have you had since you graduated?
When I first graduated from university, I worked at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service, processing
whole blood donations to make blood products for the community. I then moved into Science Communication with
the University of Melbourne and Corporate Communications at CSL - a global biopharmaceutical company.
What has been your greatest challenge throughout your jobs?
Working with many different people within my organisation and the community is a challenge and a highlight.
Knowing how to target your messages to a specific audience can be very rewarding when you get it right.
How have you used your Science knowledge in your career?
I have been able to use my passion for science in all my previous roles but always in a different capacity;
making blood products at the Australian Red Cross, discussing climate change to high school students at the
University of Melbourne, explaining how plasma-derived products worked in the human body at CSL and now understanding
energy-related products and services. Science opens up many doors - not just a career in a laboratory.
Juggling many different projects (assignments and exams) and learning to prioritise my workload is a skill I
developed while I was at uni. I am also an excellent problem solver, which I regularly attribute to my science degree!
What are your plans for the future?
Looking forward, I plan to move further into the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). CSR is the
continuing commitment by businesses to behave ethically and to contribute to economic development while improving
the quality of life of the workforce, their families, the local community, and society. I am proud to work for
an organisation that takes this commitment seriously, and I hope one day I can work with other organisations to
take up this responsibility.
